Happy Valentine's Day, Agnes

Agnes kept telling herself that she really shouldn't call Josha. She picked up the phone, dialed his number, and hung up. "How else am I supposed to get tickets?" she muttered to herself, "It's not like I'm calling to talk to him."

Every year around Valentine's Day, the Bremerton Jazz Band held a Dinner Dance to raise money for "the arts." "The arts" in this case referred to the Jazz Band, the Bremerton Symphony Orchestra, and the Bremerton Chorus. All musicians in these groups sold tickets and were encouraged to help serve the food at the dance. Josha, the Orchestra's cymbal player, was issued ten tickets to sell. By the time Agnes called him, he had somehow lost all ten tickets, his dog, and the receiver to his cordless phone.

For the first time in her life, Agnes was driving Josha insane. Every time she called him, he would run around his house trying to find the phone receiver. After this happened about five times, Josha found his phone receiver, golden retriever, and dance tickets on his back porch.

   "Hello?"

"Hi! So I was wondering if you still had some tickets to sell?"

   "Agnes?"

   "Yup!"

"Yeah, I have tickets. Who are you taking to the dance?"

"Oh, I'm gonna ask some guy." Agnes immediately started thinking about Zach. He was a little odd, but he knew a few dance steps. If he couldn't go then there was always Justin . . .

"I know a guy who wants to take you to the dance," said Josha. Running around the house searching for his phone receiver had put Josha into a romantic mood towards it. He gently caressed the phone, "but he's really shy, and you'll have to ask him."

   Agnes was flabbergasted. "Uh, Josha?"

   "Yeah?"

"You wanna go to the dance with me?"

   "Yes."

That night Josha slept with the phone receiver under his pillow.

The day before Valentine's Day, Josha totaled his car by crashing into a parked car. When asked what happened, Josha replied that he was distracted by a large fish driving down the road.

The day after, Agnes drove to Josha's house to pick him up. Being eager to see him, she arrived about an hour early. Josha was unloading a large pile of underwear and socks from his dryer. Agnes started folding and sorting his laundry, and soon was engrossed in the task. When she finished, she looked up and was startled to see Josha standing in the middle of the room in nothing but his underwear. They stared at each other for about ten seconds. Suddenly, Josha darted out of the room, ran down the hall, and locked himself in the bathroom. While Josha showered, Agnes sat on his floor and giggled hysterically.

The first part of the Dinner Dance went really well. Agnes caught Josha staring at her, even though he said he was just looking at her eye shadow. After dinner, they lined up with all the other couples at the dessert table. While Agnes was trying to pick a piece of pie, Josha started talking to Micah, another musician that he knew.

   "Hey Josha," said Micah.

   "Hey."

"Hey man, let's get out of here. You wanna go hang out at my place?"

"Hey yeah. But give me a few minutes."

Agnes picked up a piece of chocolate pie and walked away from Micah and Josha. She convinced some people at another table to let her sit with them and then moved her chair to their table. Undaunted, Josha moved his chair to that table also.

   Agnes ignored Josha.

Josha tried to start a conversation with Agnes. "So Micah and I are going to hang out after the dance is over."

   Agnes ignored him.

Josha looked at his pie, "That's a nice crust you've got there. If I had a crust it would be green."

Agnes tried not to laugh. The other people sitting at the table gave Josha a weird look, then got up and left.

"But, being a pie, you can't dance with me. I wonder if Agnes would dance with me?"

Agnes and Josha danced a few dances and sat out the rest. "I know this great place where you can see the mountains," said Josha, "we should go there."

"Okay," said Agnes, pleased that Josha had decided to hang out with her instead of Micah.

Josha drove Agnes' car to a look-out point. "I guess you can't really see mountains at night," said Josha.

Agnes waited for Josha to kiss her.

Josha squinted at the sky, "You can almost see part of it."

   Agnes waited.

"It's getting late," said Josha, turning on the car. Josha drove to his house and got out of the car.

Agnes climbed into the driver's seat and slowly drove home.

Josha was so distracted when he went in his house, that he didn't notice that his answering machine light was blinking. "You can't see mountains at night," he said to his dog. He fell asleep thinking about mountains.
Agnes fell asleep thinking about Josha. She couldn't figure out what he was thinking. "He must like me or why would he ask me to the dance? Well, he didn't really ask me . . ."

Agnes didn't hear from Josha until four months later. He had found her phone number and called it wanting to know who she was.
